FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

My unique approach involves detailed planning and a design consultation. In the design consultation we will discuss your needs and desires as well as any questions you may have. Some of the topics we will discuss and make decisions on are: clothing, location, who will be in the portrait, and when will the portraits be created. Below are some ideas to get you started. The more prepared we are for the session the more relaxed and genuine you will be. it will allow you to enjoy the process and the results will be wonderful portraits.

One if the first questions people ask is what should I wear?

This comprehensive color guide and clothing samples will be a great start to your portrait session.

Should we do pictures outside or in the studio?

Environmental portraits are taken on location. Environmental Portraits can refer to family portraits, individual portraits or corporate portraits. They are portraits in the environment where people live, work or play. For family portraits I find out what you like to do as a family and develop location ideas based in that. For some it may be an outdoor skating rink, enjoying s’mores around a campfire or a favourite park where you walk to dog. Environmental portraits can be high key or low key.

Traditional portraits can be created in the studio with either window light of studio lights. The ability to control the light allows for creativity.

Some photos are really bright and others are darker which should we pick?

A high key portrait is light, airy and little to no contrast. High key is intentionally bright and has few shadows. High key is a great technique for family portraits as it draws the viewers attention directly to the faces of the subjects.

A low key portrait is the opposite of a high key and features lots of shadows in the portraits. The bright part of the image is the face and low key draws the viewer of the portrait to the emotion of the face and eyes. There are varying degrees of low key that are created with the level of shadow you would like in the portrait.
